Online students complain about health problems they encountered when attended online classes regularly. However, those problems occur mainly if the student doesn’t have any social life outside their study. These health problems are the disadvantages of online classes. We give some harmful effects on health because of online learning below.
1. Adverse Effects of sitting in a place for a long time
The human neutral spine position is naturally upright and slightly curved. There is natural flexibility in the tendons and ligaments of the human body. This helps to naturally supple, snap, and relax after any physical activity. Excessive sitting because of online learning or internet learning may create lumbago, which is also known as “lower back pain”. The long sitting posture leads to a muscle spasm resulting in excessive muscle ache. This lower back pain also results indirectly in Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. These diseases can be caused by sitting in one posture for hours. Sitting in one posture in front of a computer may cause narrowing of the space around the spinal cord. This is a serious condition called Stenosis, which also affects the spinal cord and Central nervous system of humans. Excessive sitting for online exams, tests, classes, and other assessment works creates stomach, Bowel, and bladder problems.
It is one problem that resulted from the excessive use of computers and laptops for internet learning. The eyes get tired when we use those intensely. Eyes start swelling, which is mainly known as “digital eye swelling”. It causes headaches, difficulty in concentration, immense sensitivity to light, pain in the neck, blurred vision, watery or intense dry eyes, itching, and sometimes even difficulty in opening eyes. This condition also restrains students during online exams bringing serious medical issues. The extended use of computers for online education can also bring permanent vision problems. We rarely keep the recommended distance of 22 inches between the computer and our eyes. Our excessive glare to the computer screen and harsh reflections creates eye fatigue either of double vision or Eyestrain.
3. Mental Health
Good mental health is the necessity of human beings. Virtual learning brings unpredictable and invisible mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, internet addiction, stress, panic disorder, etc. Students in online classes visually observe their educational environment. These students cannot sense the traditional classrooms and never meet their peers. This results in anxiety and leads students to loneliness. Their mood changes and attention is altered. The lack of contact among peers is missing, which causes severe anxiety disorder. They do their assigned task in virtual distance groups. The student sometimes starts to suffer mental health disorders. The teachers and mentors of their distance virtual programs are unable to assess and mentally motivate them. As a result, sometimes students show poor academic performance, missing classes, damaging course work, and deterioration of their grades. Internet learning may bring devastating mental health disorders, which may ruin the future of the students. There is a need for social interaction for mind grooming, flourishing, and maturity. Virtual education never helps in a student’s mental grooming.
Online education alters the sleep cycles of students. It affects the body’s circadian rhythm or internal biological clock. The human body is naturally built up, which is inclined to sleep when it’s dark and wake when it is light. The excessive use of computers for online learning brings changes in the routine, and immense exposure creates restlessness. This in turns creates insomnia. Insomnia may lead students to excessive worrisome mind blockage, blurred thinking, and excessive body pain. Insomnia may disturb humans psychologically and physically.
Excessive sitting during online examinations coupled with less physical activity can result in stomach diseases like gastroenteritis, intestinal pain, acidity, peptic ulcer, and various stomach pains. The human stomach works 24/7 digesting food. Regular walks and physical exercises help food moving inside the body, which helps in the release of certain chemicals. These chemicals help in the food’s digestion. The absence of physical exercise after a meal can cause serious stomach disorders. This also creates temporary constipation and irregular bowel pain. This can lead students to attendance issues and damage education.
The human is by nature gets addicted when it has excessive exposure to something. Excessive sitting is one of the irregularities caused by online educations. There is no movement and the students sit all the time and look at the screen of laptops and computers. Sometimes, the online class is taken place during lunchtime or dinner, so students must have to skip the meal for attending it. This brings the time alteration of the meal and hence results in obesity. Also, along with the changed meal-time, The lack of physical exercise creates obesity which is harmful to human health.
The aforementioned six health problems deeply affect the studies of the students. Either remedy must be brought into considerations or virtual education must be restrained. The benefits of online education cannot be denied, but human health also cannot be ignored. Human health is the foremost thing to be considered as an old saying “health is wealth”. The online education providers must keep human health as the focus center, along with online resources for students. They must keep students in touch and assess them timely. They must provide a healthy, constructive, and productive environment for students.
The remedy to all the above problems is to do regular physical activities and meet and talk with different people. If the student does physical exercise regularly and communicates with people in-home and outside regularly, then all the above problems can be resolved.
